What Is A Diaphragm Pump Used For?

diaphragm pump

Diaphragm pumps are a type of positive displacement pump, meaning they move a fixed volume of liquids mechanically through the pump system. Two pumping chambers fill up alternately and are discharged by flexible diaphragms. As the chamber on one side fills up, the air is fed to the section on the opposite side, which causes the pumping action.

There are several different uses for diaphragm pumps, and they can handle a variety of liquids and viscosities. While they’re fairly robust, they’re typically limited to just low pressure applications. The most common use for diaphragm pumps is in dispensing, metering, or dosing applications. In addition to these though, diaphragm pumps can also be used for:

Mining

Diaphragm pumps are capable of operating in classified and hazardous areas, which makes them great for use in mining operations. Some of their uses include dewatering above and below ground sites and quarries, transferring abrasive slurries and sludge mixtures, dosing reagents, transferring solvents for separating minerals from ore, and transferring fuels for vehicles and equipment.

Coatings

Diaphragm pumps can pump anything from low to high viscosity liquids and are capable of low shear or gentle fluid transfer. They can transfer, dispense, and dose paint, ink and dyes, feed spray guns or provide solvents to flush or clean paint lines.

Ceramics

Diaphragm pumps can also work with highly abrasive slurries, making them great for ceramic slips, day tank transfers, filling moulds, circulating ceramic slurry, or wastewater transfer.

Chemical

Diaphragm pumps provide an excellent resistance to any corrosive or hazardous chemicals. As such, they’re perfect for loading and unloading tankers, totes and barrels, batching or dosing chemicals, or for use as a portable utility pump.

Electroplating and Anodising

When it comes to electroplating and anodising, diaphragm pumps are often used for replenishing chemicals in plating and metal finishing tanks, the agitation of cleaning solutions, the circulation of liquid to avoid sedimentation, filtration, and offloading corrosive, solid laden waste.

Pulp and Paper

Printing inks, glues, kaolin clay, bulk transfer, resins, and dispersions are all pulp and paper-based applications for which diaphragm pumps can be used.

Oil and Gas

Since diaphragm pumps can operate in classified or hazardous areas, they’re the perfect choice for handling oil and gas-based applications. These include settling pond transfer, oils and glycol transfer, sumps, filter press, and bulk transfer.

Water/Waste Water Treatment

Finally, diaphragm pumps can also be used for water/wastewater treatment. Applications include transferring solid laden media, filter press, sumps, or utility pumps.
