When it comes to commercial pumps, there are so many different types to choose from. Each type of pump has its own unique functionalities and applications that they are most suited for.
All commercial pumps are used to transport fluids from one place to another, but the type of fluids they can transport, and the way they achieve this is different for each pump type. Today we are looking at the most popular types of commercial pumps, how they work and the industries they are used in.
Centrifugal Commercial Pumps
Centrifugal pumps work by using an impeller with curved blades to accelerate fluids outwards. The impeller rotates quickly, and they are usually powered by a combustion engine or electric motor. These are one of the most commonly used commercial pumps because they are able to handle range of fluids and are simple and cheap to manufacture. There are centrifugal pumps for both clean water and wastewater, so you can choose a model which is best suited to your requirements.
Diaphragm Pumps
Another option for commercial pumps is the diaphragm pump. These can be found in various industries and are efficient at pumping a wide selection of liquids such as petrol, oil, food and beverage products, and even cement. A diaphragm pump is a form of positive displacement pump and they work by compressing air to move two diaphragms. Unlike other commercial pumps, these do not use an electric motor for power.
Screw Pumps
Screw pumps are derived from the ancient Archimedes Screw principle and are available as either twin screw pumps or triple screw pumps. A triple screw pump uses a central drive screw that meshes between two idler screws. They rotate in order to transport fluids from the inlet to the outlet. Due to the design of screw pumps, they are not a good option for solids or abrasive liquids, so if you need to handle these then other commercial pumps are recommended.
Self-Priming Pumps
When it comes to commercial pumps, versatility is key. Self-priming pumps are a very versatile solution compared with negative suction head applications. They are equipped with externally lubricated seals to prevent seal damage which can be caused by dry running. Self-priming pumps are available in stainless steel, bronze or cast iron, making them great for many commercial applications.
