There’s a rich and storied history behind the scenes at Oberdorfer Pumps, with their market-leading quality, ingenuity and service dating back to 1890. It was during this time that the company’s founder, Moses L. Oberdorfer, first began manufacturing bronze pumps from a small factory in Syracuse, NY. The purpose of these early pumps was lubricating early automobile, aircraft, and motorboat engine cylinder walls.
After revolutionising pump manufacturing and design for the automotive industry, the company turned its gaze to aviation. Thanks to the company’s innovative nature and quality products, the first commercial air-cooled aircraft engines all came equipped with Oberdorfer’s bronze gear pumps. A single crankshaft-driven pump was responsible for lubricating the four in-line cylinders.
Oberdorfer Pumps In The Early 20th Century
As WWI rolled around, Oberdorfer saw fit to start manufacturing pumps that could be used by the marine industry, such as bilge pumps and centrifugal pumps. These were fully automatic and submersible, and by the 1930s, Oberdorfer Pumps were the very first manufacturer to supply the marine industry with such pumps.
The private boat market came to a halt with the onset of WWII, and instead, Oberdorfer Pumps decided to aim their efforts more toward industrial and defence industries.
Post WWII
There was a huge demand for pumps from the industrial and agricultural markets once the war had ended, especially with new and more advanced materials now available. To meet the demand, Oberdorfer created the brand known as CHEMSTEEL, which has since grown into three different groups: metallic, non-metallic, and mag-drive pumps.
The CHEMSTEEL range serves chemical processing industries, and all are incredibly versatile. The range is perfectly equipped to deal with any volatile or corrosive liquids, as well as non-lubricating fluids, making them perfectly adept at preserving the integrity of the chemicals and preventing any environmental hazards.
