James B Tuthill launched Tuthill Building Material Company back in 1892 as a business for manufacturing and selling brick to construction companies in Chicago. The city was experiencing rapid expansion at the time, and bricks were in high demand. It was during his time looking for an efficient way of lifting clay from the bottom of the quarry, that Tuthill stumbled across his first pump innovation. It was a small internal gear pump which worked by injecting oil into the burner of a truck mounted boiler. This was the start of the Tuthill Pump Company, which was officially created in 1927.
In 1935, Gray B Tuthill became president of Tuthill Pumps and continued to work hard on manufacturing high-quality pumps for a range of applications. He was then taken over by James G Tuthill in 1956, making Tuthill Pumps are true family run organisation. It was in 1961 when Tuthill Pumps first started to expand their range and manufacture fuel pumps as well as gear pumps. By 1967, the business had started to grow into European countries, and was quickly becoming a global name in the industry. In 1977, the company became known as Tuthill Corporation following a reorganisation of their brands. Over the next two decades, they began to manufacture other construction tools, such as pneumatic blowers. Jay Tuthill took over the reigns as CEO in 1992, and by 1996 vacuum pumps were also on their growing list of products.
